Sustainable plastics: green energy in every sheet

Clean energy. Certified. Responsible.

At NUDEC, our commitment to sustainability doesn’t start with the product, but with the energy that makes it possible. All the electricity we use in our industrial processes comes from 100% renewable sources and is certified through the European Guarantee of Origin (GoO) system.

What does it mean to consume energy with a Guarantee of Origin?

The Guarantee of Origin (GoO) is a regulated system that certifies that the electricity consumed by a user comes from renewable sources such as sun, wind, water or biomass. The GoOs allow consumers to demonstrate that their consumption has been made from renewable sources, with a mass balance approach, promoting transparency and the development of the energy transition.

How does the GdO system work?

  • Producers of renewable energy (wind, solar, hydroelectric, biomass, etc.) can request the issuance of GdO for the energy they generate.

  • The GdO are transferred to the marketing companies who, in turn, sell them to the final consumers.

  • GdOs are used to certify renewable energy consumption in different contexts, such as building certification or compliance with environmental standards.

  • The GdO system is regulated by European Directive 2001/77/EC and by Circular 1/2018 of the CNMC, guaranteeing the traceability and origin of energy.
Benefits of the Guarantee of Origin System

  • Transparency: allows consumers to know the origin of the energy they consume.

  • Promoting renewable energy: encourages producers to generate energy from renewable sources and contributes to the energy transition.

  • Compliance with environmental standards: helps businesses and consumers demonstrate their use of renewable energy and reduce their carbon footprint.

  • Developing the circular economy: creating a more sustainable, efficient, and resilient economic system that protects the environment and ensures a better future for future generations.

Value for our customers

Our ambition is not only to manufacture plastic sheets with the highest technical quality. We want to do so with responsibility and transparency. That’s why our entire operation—from extrusion to packaging—is powered by GdO-certified energy.

For an electro-intensive company like NUDEC, this step represents much more than a technical improvement. It means aligning our activity with a vision of the future where innovation goes hand in hand with environmental responsibility. Our highly technical and efficient, it is powered by clean energy. All under the same commitment: to reduce the environmental impact of our operations without compromising our manufacturing quality.

Furthermore, these types of actions allow us to clearly and traceably communicate our commitment to a more responsible supply chain, providing credibility to consumers, investors, and regulators. In a context where corporate action is key to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), measures like this are aimed at manufacturing with fewer emissions without sacrificing technological innovation or competitiveness.

Energy commitment with real impact

At NUDEC, we believe that sustainability is not demonstrated by intentions, but by concrete decisions. Therefore, all the electricity we use to manufacture our plastic plates comes exclusively from renewable sources, certified through Guarantees of Origin (GdO). This system guarantees that every kWh consumed is backed by equivalent renewable production—solar, wind, hydropower, or other clean technologies—tracked and verified by an official operator of the Spanish energy system.

What does it mean to consume energy with a Guarantee of Origin?

Contribute to the climate objectives of their sectors and markets.

How does this action contribute to the SDGs?

SDG #7: Ensure access to affordable and reliable energy

  • Target 7.2: increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix.

By contracting energy with GdO, NUDEC boosts demand for electricity from renewable sources (solar, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, etc.). This action not only reduces the use of fossil fuels but also strengthens the economic model that finances and expands renewable capacity, accelerating the energy transition at the European level.

SDG #12: Sustainable consumption and production patterns

  • Target 12.6: Encourage companies to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.

By incorporating certified renewable energy into its production and communicating it transparently, NUDEC promotes a more responsible value chain. This type of decision encourages suppliers and customers to also consider energy sustainability in their operations.

SDG #13: Action to combat climate change

  • Target 13.2: Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning.

Energy consumption with GdO reduces indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 2), which actively contributes to mitigating climate change. Although it does not involve a direct reduction at source, the systemic effect on the decarbonization of the electricity mix is real and verifiable.

By 2025, Spain will consolidate its position as one of the most advanced European countries in the development of renewable energy. Currently, more than 56% of the electricity generated in Spain comes from renewable sources, a figure that marks a new historical record and reflects the accelerated evolution of the national energy system.

The contribution of clean energy sources is not limited solely to meeting energy demand. Their expansion has had a direct impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, representing significant progress toward the climate commitments outlined in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC).

From an environmental perspective, the positive impact is evident: more than 76% of the electricity generated in Spain now comes from zero-emission sources (including renewables and nuclear energy), which allows progress in the decarbonization of productive sectors, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and improving air quality.

The global energy transition: progress, challenges, and regional disparities

The transition to a renewable energy system is a global priority for mitigating climate change and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, progress in this transformation varies significantly across regions.

Europe is positioning itself as a world leader in the adoption of renewable energy, driven by robust public policies and a regulatory framework that favors sustainable investment. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Europe has made significant progress in integrating clean energy and improving energy efficiency, consolidating its role in the fight against greenhouse gas emissions..
