ISCC+

International Sustainability & Carbon Certification

A sustainability certification system with which we establish traceability in the supply chains of raw materials of renewable origin. In this way, we contribute to the change towards the circular economy and the bioeconomy, manifesting our contributions through the use of the ISCC PLUS certified system.

One of the major advantages of the ISCC PLUS mass balance approach is the possibility to gradually increase the share of bio-based and/or circular feedstocks in the production process. In addition, the calculated share of bio-based and/or circular feedstocks can be attributed on an equivalent basis to one or several outputs. On this basis, the ISCC PLUS mass balance approach allows system users to make credible claims.

ISCC supports the transition to a circular economy and bioeconomy

In combination with the durability, which gives plastic its value in the first place, the missing waste management has led to severe environmental pollution. Most plastics never degrade but decompose into smaller particles and become microplastics. Hence, the long-term impact on the oceans, wildlife and ultimately humans is beyond imagination.

Find out how we fight against microplastics at NUDEC.

Bio-based alternatives to fossil components

In a circular economy, remaining virgin inputs can change to renewable feedstocks from responsibly managed sources. Bio-based materials reduce the dependency on limited fossil resources and are able to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Corn, sugarcane, vegetable oils or other plant materials, as well as second-generation biomass (e.g. bio-based wastes or crop residues) or third-generation biomass (e.g. seaweed, algae), can be used as feedstocks in the production process.

ISCC sustainability certification of circular and bio-based approaches

ISCC PLUS is a standard well-recognised by all stakeholders for recycled and bio-based materials. ISCC PLUS certification provides traceability along the supply chain and verifies that companies meet environmental and social standards. For companies using the mass balance approach, ISCC PLUS certification verifies that the mass balance accounting follows predefined and transparent rules.

For a more sustainable world

Lead the transition to a circular economy and bioeconomy.
  • Implementation of zero-deforestation
  • Protection of land with high biodiversity value and high carbon stock.
  • Protection of soil, water and air
  • Compliance with human, labour and land rights
  • Measurement and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
  • Traceability throughout supply chains
  • Compliance with laws and international treaties
  • Good management practices

ISCC+ NUDEC Certificate

NUDEC is certified in ISCC PLUS by the CGN certifier in March 2021 with the intention of manufacturing plastic sheets with raw material of sustainable origin, either bio-circular or recycled, through the mass balance approach. NUDEC’s ISCC PLUS certificate can be found by searching in the certifying company’s website or by clicking here.

Mass Balance

ISCC offers two chain of custody options for ISCC system users. Materials are either physically segregated in production processes throughout the supply chain or mixed in production but separated in bookkeeping (mass balance approach).

Why it is necessary?

Mass balance is about mixing fossil and renewable but keeping track of their quantities and allocating them to specific products.

Explained by SABIC

Mass balance approach is being increasingly used as we switch from using traditional fossil fuel feedstocks to more sustainable feedstocks to develop plastics.

Example of another sector

Mass balance ensures that while certified cocoa might not end up in every individual chocolate bar, the supply chain is still buying cocoa from Rainforest Alliance Cert. farms.

Sustainable plastic sheets

Colaboración de NUDEC con SABIC para producir placas de policarbonato con materia prima renovable.

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry, today announced its collaboration with NUDEC, S. A. for the manufacturing of clear plastic sheets using resin based on certified renewable feedstock.

Our use of SABIC’s renewable polycarbonate resin LEXAN™ (part of their TRUCIRCLE™ sustainable product portfolio) will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of its ISCC-certified NUDEC PC products, preserving the identical properties as sheets extruded from fossil-based raw material.

The production process of ISCC PLUS-certified products conforms to the concept of mass balance, which helps plot the flow of materials along the supply chain and gradually increase the proportion of bio-based and circular-based raw materials.

NUDEC is the first company in the plastics sheet sector to offer its customers an alternative product that fully matches their sustainability and development goals based on our respect for the environment and our commitment to reducing the global footprint of our products. When combined with our investment in 100% renewable energy, this further enhances our ISCC NUDEC PC product and all other products produced. You can see the press release here.
